A couple of weeks ago, I riffled through the kitchen cabinets looking for my Vietnamese coffee press and treated myself to Vietnamese iced coffee all week. I love how strong the coffee is and the meditative ritual of waiting for that slow drip to finish. But mostly, I love how much just seeing the orange Cafe du Monde coffee tin reminds me of my late dad. I am grateful I rediscovered another way to feel connected to him 🧡☕. I wanted to share the joys of this traditional treat from Vietnam and show you how to make your own Vietnamese Iced Coffee.
So what is Vietnamese coffee? It’s essentially just two ingredients poured over ice. Condensed milk and a slowly brewed chicory coffee. The most popular brand used is Cafe du Monde. And you’ll also need a Vietnamese drip filter or coffee press.
Here’s a video on how to make it.
Vietnamese Iced Coffee
Equipment
- Vietnamese Coffee Press
Ingredients
- 2-4 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk depending on personal taste
- 2 tablespoons chicory coffee, most common brand is Cafe du Monde
- 1 cup boiling water
Instructions
- Pour the condensed milk to the bottom of a glass
- Place coffee cup grounds in a Vietnamese coffee press and screw the filter on top of the grounds. The tighter the screw the slower the drip. The slower the drip, the stronger the coffee.
- Place the press on top of the glass.
- Pour the boiling water into the Vietnamese coffee press and let it drip through. I like to do this step twice.
- Mix the coffee with the condensed milk and serve over ice.
It tastes so good! I especially love the first sip after going a few weeks without. While we eagerly await for coffee shops to safely open, you can still have quarantine coffee indulgences at home. Add Vietnamese Iced Coffee (Cà phê sữa đá) to your home brewing adventures. So, friends, have you spruced up your coffee routine during your extended time at home?
