Last night I was invited to try out Durham restaurant, It’s a Southern Thing’s spring menu, officially launching this Friday, May 18th. I’m so excited to walk you through their new dishes because it gives me an excuse to drool over my photos and relive a delicious night!
It’s a Southern Thing’s New Spring Menu
First up, my favorite vegetable second to the potato, cauliflower! The fried cauliflower is dusted with parmesan cheese and served with addictive chipotle ranch dipping sauce. This is the perfect way to get someone like me to eat vegetables. Fry them, add cheese, and a flavorful sauce.
Pictured with the cauliflower are two new cocktails. The yellow one is Tequilla Mockingbird, which has mango nectar, fresh cilantro, Correlejo Resposado Tequila, and fresh ginger syrup. The other cocktail is called, A Shrub Is a Guy Who Thinks He’s Fly. A mouthful of a name right? Ha! This one has Ruby Red Grapefruit, kaffir lime shrub, with Deep Eddy’s Grapefruit Infused Vodka. The Deep Eddy’s makes this Texan girl living in North Carolina very happy.
Another starter addition to the new spring menu is Pulled Pork Nachos. The house-smoked pulled pork is served on top of fresh chips and creamy cheese. The pickled jalapeños and red onions brighten up this hearty appetizer.
We also tried the Shrimp and Crawfish Po’Boy ! I couldn’t stop snacking on those fries throughout the evening. The fried crawfish and shrimp with the pickles and house-made remoulade filling might be one of my favorite bites from the preview. The bread was too chewy for my own personal taste. (I have a serious case of lockjaw.)
Pictured with the sandwich is the Pine-Ing For Summer cocktail, made with Plantation Pineapple Rum, Austin Eastciders Pineapple Cider. I gave It’s a Southern Thing all the bonus points for using Austin Eastciders in one of their cocktails because I’m always pine-ing for Austin! My dining companions agreed that it tasted like a vacation!
The Pan Seared Red Snapper over garlicky green beans, topped with tomato salad and creamy adobo sauce is a healthy addition to the spring menu. Definitely a great counter to the more heartier menu items!
The last entree we previewed was Jamie’s BBQ 1/4 Chicken. This oven-roasted chicken is served on a bed of cheesy herb potatoes. Meat, potatoes, and cheese, a classic American trinity.
We finished on a sweet note with the Strawberry Bourbon “Shortcake” Biscuit. Look, I’m not a dessert girl and by this time, I was so full that I anticipated only taking one bite. Well, let’s just say I took more than one bite. The strawberries are soaked in bourbon, and the sweet biscuit gave the classic shortcake a fun Southern twist. Also, that chantilly cream, y’all. So dang good.
So as you can see, the new spring menu is a stellar one. Again, it debuts this Friday, just in time to celebrate the weekend!
Question: Which of these new dishes do you find most inviting?
