The moment I walked into Grizzela’s for happy hour last week, I fell in love. Grizzelda’s, a new Mexican restaurant in Austin, is the brain child of married couple Adam Jacoby (of Jacoby’s Restaurant & Mercantile) and Kris Swift. Kris Swift was charged with designing the wonderland. The space is so dreamy! Among the decorative details are floral wallpaper, pink and gold accents, potted plants, velvet chairs, and a crystal chandelier on the patio. I learned the chandelier was the same one from their wedding. I like to imagine that this world they built for us to visit, is a reflection of their love. And that beautiful and sentimental chandelier supports my theory!
Who doesn’t love a strong cocktail named after strong woman? (Throughout the menu at at Grizzelda’s, there are nods to bad ass women.) The Bad Girl Riri has passion fruit and lime and pisco and mezcal.
You know when you order something at a restaurant and after eating it, it’s decided that you’ll be ordering this dish at every subsequent visit? Well, I’ll always be ordering the Puerco Pibil Taco when I come to Grizzelda’s. The succulent meat falls apart perfectly and the dash of habernero sauce gives it an addictive kick.
We also ordered the a side of beets and that day’s special, which was prawns. Have I told you about one of my 2017 goals? I strive to eat just one measly serving of vegetables a day. I could easily eat two or three servings if they are as good as these beets, or in Spanish, these “betebal asado” ($8). Served with crema, pickled jalapenos, and verdolagas. In case you didn’t know what verdolagas were, it’s Mexican parsley.
Don’t the Tostadas de Atun look whimsical? The crispy salty shallots were such a great topping for this ahi tuna and avocado tostada. I savored each bite.
We finished our magical girl date with the tres leches cake. I’ve ordered many a tres leches cake but Grizzelda’s stands most unique, with its margarita foam and chili sprinkles.
All in all, a spectacular first impression of Grizzelda’s. It’s been a few days and I haven’t stopped raving about it. Just ask my instagram followers!
