Pawtucket, Rhode Island: Modern Diner May 19, 2011

One of my life’s goal is to visit all 50 states. While I was up on my 4th visit to Boston this past week, Best Friend and I took advantage of the fact that we can drive less than an hour and end up in another state. We drove south for 45 minutes to Pawtucket, Rhode Island to dine at Modern Diner, the first diner to be placed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Modern Diner, a Sterling Streamliner, was first opened in the 1940s and was originally located on Dexter Street. Word is it is one of two remaining Sterling Streamliners. I loved the feel of the diner upon walking in. It felt as if we were time traveling.

Even though we were here for lunch and we had already breakfasted at Flour, I have a habit of always relenting to breakfast food if it’s being served all day. Best Friend felt the same way, so we shared the Tomato Pesto Omelet and the Strawberry Stuffed French Toast.

The home fries were downright addictive. The omelet encased ingredients we love together (and had inside a pocket at Flour that very same day), tomatoes, pesto, and cheese. Mmm.

Goodness, the mascarpone cheese in the Strawberry Stuffed French Toast was sweet and gooey and the strawberries, drizzled in maple syrup made for a very sinful indulgence.

Overall it was a grand experience. We gobbled down everything. Our waitress was attentive and sweet. Lastly, it was very affordable, totaling up to just under $18. Completely worth the drive, Modern Diner was a fantastic way to cross Rhode Island off my list.

Things to keep in mind:

This establishment is cash only.
They’re open only during breakfast and lunch hours.

They aren’t open for dinner? How’d I miss that?

THE HOME FRIES HAD GARLIC. God. I’m reliving the french toast. It was fantastic.

The french toast was super fantastic. I usually steer away from plain french toast and pancakes but the cheese and strawberries called me over and I didn’t regret one bite.

OHHH! the food looks so good. It’s mouthwatering. I absolutely love breakfast for anytime of the day. Tomato Pesto Omelet now that’s something I want to try cooking at home! That all just sounds divine
