Bulleted Recap: An Evening with Anthony Bourdain April 5, 2010

Anthony Bourdain

Last Thursday, Jamie and I had a fabulous date that included an evening with Anthony Bourdain. He came to the Paramount to chew the fat with us Austin folks and as Paramount does not allow us to photograph their beautiful theatre, and Bourdain had an early flight to catch, I sadly have no photos to share except proof of ticket purchase. He spent about 2 hours with us. The first hour was him talking to us, it was very much like biting food stand up. He had the audience in stitches with his foul mouthed snarky quips. The second hour was pure Q&A.

Follows is my bulleted excuse of a recap from that evening.

  • He likened Austin to an enlightened island of Texas. I think this seduced us.
  • His favorite country is Italy, homeland of his wife. He tells us he wishes he were born Italian.
  • His second favorite country currently is Vietnam. He made 5-10 shout outs for my parent’s native land. It tickled me that the 5-10 Vietnamese audience members will cheer every time he gave Vietnam a mention. He actually plans to move there for a year soon.
  • He likened being a vegetarian and traveling to going to the Louvre and only seeing the paintings in blue.
  • I lost count how many times he said MFer.
  • He plans to come back to Austin in June to spotlight the wonderful trailer eats and food trucks we have.
  • Food Travel Recommendation: Tokyo is an “acid trip” for a foodie. He promises you’ll come back changed and blown away and warns it can be traumatic, the culture shock.
  • Food Travel Recommendation: Singapore he called “Asia Light.” Everyone speaks English and you can try cuisine from a slew of Asian countries just in their malls.
  • Food Travel Recommendation: Spain. Food. Good.
  • Food Travel Recommendation: Never eat at the foreign hotels. The locals of a foreign country working at the hotels are making their version of “Western” foods which with they are not familiar. Secondly, they are not invested in your health as they expect you to fly back to your part of the world by the time you catch on you’ve just been accidentally poisoned. Your best bet to warding off food sickness is to eat the local food.
  • Anthony Bourdain spends little time in Scandinavia. He says he prefers his country dirtier and a little disordered and they’re a bit too clean and orderly for him.
  • Food Travel Recommendation: Be polite. If you are offered steamed puppy heads, eat the steamed puppy heads. “F- your principles” is a direct quotation.
  • He likened what Sandra Lee does to a Kwanzaa cake to 2 girls 1 cup. (If you do not get the reference, do yourself a favor and DO NOT google. I say that with 150 percent sincerity and seriousness. Also if you do not heed my advice, it is NOT work safe.)
  • Food Travel Recommendation: Hong Kong.

That concludes my bulleted recap. Enjoy!! I have now added Anthony Bourdain’s books to my long reading list. Cannot wait to devour more of his words.

Question: I understand Anthony Bourdain is not for everyone. Are you a fan?

I love Anthony Bourdain and his shows. I’ve seen many some time ago. Now I see some new episodes announced on some channel here in Taiwan and I can’t wait to see. He loves to eat Asian food and so do I. Many places he travels, I have been to, too, so I can relate to that. And he’s funny, although his humor is not everyone’s case.

Hey My Kafkesque Life! so nice to see you reading my blog :) As you know, I’ve been enjoying your food photos throughly. I’m glad you like Bourdain. He does LOVE asian food which is also part of his charm to me. and yes. he’s bit of a jerk on the exterior so i see why people would find him repugnant. i though, LOVE HIM.

    Hey Linda,
Just came back from Tokyo and the food WAS good! My stomach is still adjusting to this American diet a couple weeks later. Love Anthony Bourdain! He’s coming to Houston soon and I plan to see him!

    Hey Von,
I’m so jealous about your trip by the way! and I’ve heard that the Japanese culture are neurotically obessed with perfection to the point where their ‘nature’ isn’t really nature. Every tree and plant in the mountain sides were deliberately placed and planted just so! Crazy.
Would love to visit Tokyo one day.

I love Anthony Bourdain, but I disagree with him on the vegetarian thing. I never feel like I’m missing anything because I don’t eat meat. In fact, I’m quite happy with my dietary choices and am always discovering great new recipes. It does take a little creativity when eating out (although, honestly, living in Austin makes it so easy that I rarely have to worry about finding something to eat), but overall I love being a vegetarian and wouldn’t ever considering going back to eating meat.
